Digital natives are changing the world. The Open Empowerment Initiative combines advanced analytics with field-based case studies to explore how cyberspace is rewiring the ways that groups, individuals and states engage with politics, economics, social action, crime and governance.
Open Empowerment is an accelerated form of political, social and economic agency enabled by the digital revolution. Open Empowerment is self-empowerment that is scaling faster than institutions, rules and norms can respond.
From 2013-2016, the Foundation partnered with the Igarapé Institute to produce ground-breaking research on Open Empowerment in Latin America, with generous funding from the International Development Research Centre (Canada). The research was published in 2016. Currently OEI is looking to expand its lens to Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia.
